Googling symptoms.”

Within minutes, he had diagnosed himself with everything from acidity to a serious cardiac condition. An AI chatbot suggested breathing exercises, lifestyle changes and, just in case, a hospital visit.

Now imagine the next step. Instead of going to the hospital, he decides to be the hospital. He walks into the emergency ward, looks at a row of machines, selects one that seems relevant, admits himself, prescribes an injection and, because YouTube exists, even considers minor surgery.

Absurd. Yet in the world of money, this behaviour is celebrated. Welcome to the age of the D and D bug. Direct and DIY.

Direct plans and DIY investing sound efficient. No intermediaries, fewer conversations, lower costs and full control. It feels like driving without a map because you think you know the city, or assembling a parachute mid air because the instructions looked simple.

The problem is not doing things yourself. The problem is assuming that information equals insight. A medical scan can show a problem, but it cannot explain what it means for your body, history or future. In the same way, an investment app can show returns and charts, but it cannot understand your life.

Most DIY investors start with confidence and end with anxiety. They know which fund topped the charts, which stock is trending and which strategy worked for someone else. What they often lack is a diagnosis. Is this money meant for growth or stability. Is it tied to a goal or just parked somewhere. Can you stay invested when markets misbehave, or will emotions take over.

In medicine, treatment without diagnosis is dangerous. In investing, it is simply called being hands on.

AI has made access easier, but ease should not be mistaken for judgement. AI processes data well, not fear, regret or family responsibilities. It does not know that market corrections keep you awake at night, that a career transition is around the corner or that panic sets in when screens turn red. AI can assist, but wealth creation remains deeply human.

Direct plans often highlight what you save on costs. They rarely highlight what you risk losing through poor asset allocation, missed reviews, emotional decisions or staying invested in the wrong strategy for too long. These costs do not appear on a factsheet. They surface years later, quietly and permanently, much like untreated symptoms.

At DDK Wealth Partners, we have spent over two decades watching money behave, especially when markets do not. We have seen capable professionals make avoidable mistakes, not because they lacked intelligence, but because they lacked perspective. Wealth creation is not about finding the best product. It is about building a system that evolves as life changes.

The question is simple. If you would not diagnose, admit and operate on yourself, why do it with your life’s savings. Direct and DIY are not wrong, but they are incomplete without guidance. Because when it comes to wealth, peace of mind is the return that truly matters.

A few weeks ago, a friend messaged at two in the morning.“Chest feels tight.
